Today marks the first ever International Malala Day. Over a month ago, teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai was shot for her courage in standing up for the educational rights of girls. As she continues to recover, let’s take a moment to recognize her amazing spirit and message.
How can you celebrate Malala Day?
By sharing her story. Email your friends and family. Tweet with the hashtag #iammalala. Facebook images from demonstrations (the BBC has an amazing gallery, the picture above is from their site). Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
By signing her petition. Demand an end to discrimination against girls. Demand a plan to make sure education is an option for every child. Demand action. Sign the petition at iammalala.org.
By making a donation. Donate $49 to CARE to send a girl like Malala to school for a full year. Ask your loved ones to do the same.
Education is vital to personal empowerment. Let’s all help spread Malala’s story.
