Lydia Congolese refugee makes handcrafted soy blend fair trade candles at Prosperity Candle
"It’s very peaceful...I am so excited to go to school and for my younger brother to go to school. My dream is to be a nurse!"

Born in the Congo, Lydia and her family were forced to flee their home when she was only 2 years old to escape escalating violence. Arriving at a refugee camp in Burundi, she was grateful for her new-found safety and shelter alongside her mother, father and three brothers.

In the camp, Lydia helped support their family by braiding women’s hair and selling food they cooked, but freedoms and opportunities were very limited. Then after 17 years in the camp, they were offered the chance to relocate to the United States.

Lydia joined Prosperity Candle in October 2018 and is thankful for her family’s peace and security, and the opportunity to earn a livelihood. Her dream is to take her GED exam and study to become a nurse.
